The world welcomes 2025 – level 2

03-01-2025 07:00

The new year started with big events around the world.

New York City had a ball drop at Times Square, and cities like Boston and Pittsburgh had fireworks. Auckland was the first big city to celebrate, with fireworks at Sky Tower and shows for Indigenous tribes. In Sydney, people enjoyed fireworks and music. Bangkok and Jakarta also had live performances and light shows.

In Europe, Paris had fireworks, and London had a show on the Thames. Some places, like Ukraine and Gaza, had quieter celebrations because of war. In Rio de Janeiro, there were concerts and fireworks on the beach. In Spain, people ate 12 grapes at midnight for good luck. Even with problems, many celebrated with happiness.

Difficult words: Indigenous (living in a land from the earliest times), tribe (a group of people who have the same history and culture), performance (a show for an audience).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What were some of the different ways cities around the world celebrated the new year, according to the text?
