The world welcomes 2025 – level 3

03-01-2025 07:00

The world welcomed 2025 with diverse celebrations.

In New York, crowds gathered at Times Square for the traditional ball drop, while fireworks lit up cities like Pittsburgh and Boston. Auckland, the first major city to celebrate, showcased fireworks from Sky Tower and recognized Indigenous tribes through light displays. Celebrations in Australia included fireworks in Sydney Harbor, performances, and Indigenous ceremonies. Meanwhile, Asia saw Japan preparing for the Year of the Snake, Bangkok hosting concerts, and Jakarta featuring drone shows. Amid festivities, conflict dampened celebrations in Ukraine, Gaza, and Lebanon.

In Europe, Paris had a grand fireworks show on the Champs-Élysées, while London hosted a pyrotechnic display along the Thames. Rio de Janeiro celebrated with concerts and fireworks on Copacabana Beach, and Spain followed its tradition of eating 12 grapes for luck. Despite challenges worldwide, millions embraced the new year with hope.

Difficult words: festivity (celebrating a special occasion), dampen (to make something less lively or strong), pyrotechnic (relating to fireworks).
