The youngest world chess champion – level 3
23-12-2024 15:00
Gukesh Dommaraju, an 18-year-old from India, has become the youngest world chess champion in history. He defeated Ding Liren from China during a 14-game tournament in Singapore.
Gukesh’s win was historic, as he broke the record set by Garry Kasparov, who became champion at age 22. This victory made Gukesh a national hero in India, a country where cricket is usually the most celebrated sport. When he arrived at the airport in Chennai, fans welcomed him with cheers, flowers, and posters. Gukesh thanked them, saying it felt amazing to bring the trophy back to India. Students from his school held placards celebrating his success.
Gukesh, who became a grandmaster at the age of 12, has inspired many young people to pursue chess professionally. His father has supported him throughout his career. Gukesh is only the second Indian to win the title, following Viswanathan Anand. He will be honored by the government and meet Prime Minister Modi later this month.
Difficult words: placard (a sign or poster with messages or pictures), pursue (to follow).
