What is flash-panning? – level 3

20-09-2024 07:00

Flash-panning is a modern dating trend similar to love bombing and ghosting. It starts with intense excitement, often including attention, dates, and shared experiences.

The relationship might look perfect, especially on social media. However, when reality comes into play, like dealing with schedules or responsibilities, the person, called the flashpanner, suddenly disappears. Flashpanners are often novelty seekers who love the excitement of getting to know someone but lose interest once the relationship becomes more serious. They enjoy the fun stage but cannot manage conflicts or compromises that come later. Because of this, the relationship suddenly ends, leaving the other person confused or wondering what went wrong.

Relationship expert Susan Winter says that flashpanners don’t understand that conflicts are normal in relationships. Since they don’t know how to handle them, they vanish without explanation, which is emotionally painful for the person left behind.

Difficult words: novelty (something new and exciting), compromise (a way of reaching an agreement in which each person or group gives up something that was wanted to end the argument), vanish (to disappear quickly).
